African Summer for Academic Development for Social Work students

Welcome to the African Summer for Academic Development for Social Work students! This unique program is a collaborative effort between the African Center for the Study of the United States and the National Association of Black Social Workers, aimed at providing an enriching experience for social work students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Designed to broaden horizons and deepen understanding, this program offers a transformative two-week journey to study social work in the vibrant setting of South Africa. Under the guidance of esteemed professors from Wits University, students will gain invaluable insights into social work from a global perspective, enriching their academic and professional development.

During their stay, students will reside in state-of-the-art dormitories at Wits University, providing a comfortable and conducive environment for learning and growth. A comprehensive meal plan ensures that students are well-nourished throughout their stay, allowing them to focus fully on their studies and exploration.

Beyond the classroom, students will have the opportunity to engage with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), gaining firsthand knowledge of their impactful work within the community. Visits to organizations and cultural sites such as the Apartheid Museum and Nelson Mandela’s House offer profound insights into South Africa’s rich history and ongoing social challenges.

But it’s not all work and no play! Students will also have ample opportunities to immerse themselves in the vibrant energy of Johannesburg, experiencing leisure activities and exploring the city’s dynamic culture.

Qualifying for this program is straightforward. Applicants must be enrolled in an HBCU, majoring in social work, and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above. A valid passport and travel insurance (obtained after confirmation of acceptance) are required to ensure a smooth and secure journey.
