The Eastern DRC Conflict: Unpacking Past and Current Factors, Navigating the Future.

March 6, 2025 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

With M23 rebels now in control of large swaths of North Kivu and South Kivu, the armed conflict in the eastern DRC is no longer a mere flare-up. It is evolving into a game-changing war with immense ramifications for the DRC, the eastern and southern African regions, and the world at large. M23’s seizure of the city of Goma in late January attracted rapt attention from around the world as evidenced by heavy media reporting and a flurry of diplomatic activity. The debates and discussions have been argued from multiple viewpoints, some impartial, others self-interested. This virtual event delves deeper into the evolving crisis to provide nuanced perspectives on the key aspects of the conflicts. The speakers will go beyond popular narratives to explain the following dimensions:

  • Contextualizing the recent flare-up: why now?
  • The key combatants: Rwanda, the M23, and the Democratic of Congo.
  • Regional stakes: the EAC and SADC.
  • Country interests: Uganda, Kenya, South Africa.
  • Continental perspectives: Implications for the AU.
  • The crystal ball: what should be expected in the next weeks and months.
