African Stakeholders Convene to Advance Africa’s Agency in a Changing Global Order

Johannesburg, 2–3 July 2026 – African policymakers, scholars, civil society representatives and international affairs experts gathered at the University of the Witwatersrand for a roundtable discussion on “African Agency in a Shifting Global Order: African Priorities on the Reform of the Multilateral System.” In the context of a shifting geopolitical dynamics, Africa needs to revive its agency in order to contribute towards reviving the principles of international cooperation and shaping the future of multilateralism.
The two-day roundtable, convened by University of Witwatersrand in partnership with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) and the Institute for Global Dialogue, examined Africa’s role in shaping reforms to the global governance system amid growing geopolitical competition, weakening multilateral cooperation and calls for reform of institutions such as the United Nations and global financial architecture.
