Black History Month Event: Exploring Jazz, Revolution, and Leadership

Join us for a thought-provoking Black History Month event at the Humanities Graduate Centre on 19 February 2025, from 13:00 to 15:00. This event will feature two compelling talks that explore the intersections of culture, politics, and leadership in Black history.

  • “Jazz, Vice, Geography, & Revolution: The Triumph and Fall of the Harlem and Sophiatown Renaissances (1920-1948)”
    By Blair M. Proctor, PhD
    This talk delves into the rise and fall of Harlem and Sophiatown as cultural and political hubs, highlighting their role in shaping Black artistic and intellectual movements.
  • “Elijah Muhammad”
    By Asad el Malik, PhD
    A deep dive into the life and impact of Elijah Muhammad, examining his leadership and influence on Black identity, self-determination, and political consciousness.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session, providing an opportunity for discussion and engagement.
