THE 2026 MINING INDABAS: GEOSTRATEGIC TAKEAWAYS, IMPERATIVES AND FUTURES ON AFRICAN CRITICAL MINERALS

By Kennedy Manduna
Introduction
Since 1994, when the first Investing in African Mining Indaba was held, and with the arrival of the Alternative Mining Indaba in 2008, Cape Town’s hot, long days and ideal-for-beach February month of wine have become synonymous with busy roads and expensive hotels. This is thanks to the high-level discussions and deal signings between the mining business community, government officials and members of the diplomatic corps from across the world at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), and the progressive academics, activists, organisations and movements gathering mainly at the DoubleTree Hotel, contesting and resisting extractive capitalism imbued in these deals. These events have evolved over the years into critical agenda-setting platforms, mingling conference diplomacy with transactional deal-making and resource advocacy.
