THE EASTERN DRC CONFLICT: UNPACKING PAST AND CURRENT FACTORS, NAVIGATING THE FUTURE.

Introduction.


The Webinar on DRC conflict is co-organized by African Centre for the study of the US (ACSUS),
at the University of Witwatersrand and the International Relations Society of Kenya (IRSK).
IRSK has emerged and sustained itself as one of the major platforms for discussion of multiple
issues. The IRSK Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Leonard Wanyama, delivered the welcoming
remarks, expressing gratitude for the partnership and its potential to foster connections on
key issues in international relations and diplomacy, both in Kenya and beyond. He provided an
overview of IRSK, highlighting its role as the umbrella organization that facilitates idea
exchange and networking among professionals in the field.

The webinar was moderated by Dr. Nicodemas Minde, who is a researcher with the Institute
for Security studies based in Nairobi. He started off the meeting on the discussion of the
Eastern DRC conflict also referred to as the Congo conflict. He observed that the webinar is an
opportunity to gain expert insight and engage in a very important conversation. He introduced
the speakers including: Prof Gilbert Khadiagala, Dr Tatiana Carayannis, Dr Claude Kabemba,
and Prof David Monyae.
